How Do You File a Home Insurance Claim?

Most people purchase a home insurance policy with the hopes that they will never have to file a claim. This insurance is a great safety net in case of an accident, but what happens when you have to file your first home insurance claim?

Here are the main steps you must take in order to file a home insurance claim.

Ensure Everyone’s Safety

No matter what type of accident occurred or what claim you are filing, it is crucial that everyone receives medical attention as needed. Bad storms and accidents can lead to injuries, and everyone involved should seek medical help immediately. This is especially important for liability claims in which you or a family member has caused harm to another person.

Call Your Insurance Agent

Once you’ve decided to file a claim, contact your insurance agent. They will be able to walk you through the process of opening a claim. The insurance provider will then send a claims adjuster from the company to investigate the claim and calculate how much compensation you will receive based on the accident and your policy.

Have the Damage Professionally Evaluated

In many cases, you may want someone aside from the claims adjuster to look at the damages before filing a claim. Having a professional provide a quote on repairs or replacements can help you calculate how much you will pay. If the damages cost less than the price of your deductible, you may not be able to file a claim. The deductible is how much you must pay out of pocket when you file a home insurance claim. If you cannot reach this deductible, you may not receive any compensation from your home insurance policy.

Document All Damages

After you’ve regained your ground after an accident or disaster, take stock of the damages. It can help to include pictures and professional quotes of the damages and how much you have lost. Presenting the facts to your insurance agent and the claims adjuster can help the process go quicker and smoother, as well as ensuring that you receive the compensation you deserve.

Before a disaster strikes, make sure to check your home insurance policy and understand its coverages and limits. Not everything is covered under home insurance, and if you have any questions about your policy, speak with your insurance agent.
